Chat corner, (non)canonical

Hi,

here's your weekly chat post. Do you want to talk about Star Wars?

~ ~ ~

I was thinking about getting back to writing, and that led me to musing about headcanons. The original meaning, a piece of world- or character-building that isn't canon, but you feel it fits so well that your brain just treats it as if it were. Do you have any SW headcanons? It's a bit more tricky for SW I think, with the Legends vs Disney canon... maybe a SW fandom-specific type of headcanon is a person's choice of which Legends events they still consider "real"?

Check-In Post - March 9th 2026

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What is a craft that you tried but abandoned?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Let's Go Karaoke Live Action

For my Karaoke Iko people out there, the Let's Go Karaoke movie live-action is available on the Japanese Film Festival website until June 3rd (JST)! Hopefully for your region, too.

If you're not familiar, I can also warmly recommend the 5 episode anime that's on Crunchyroll, if you have access.

I haven't read the manga or its sequel yet but I'm sure they're great fun too ;)

It's been super interesting to watch the movie after the anime and see the tweaks in the adaptation!! I think it all worked really well and I enjoyed it a lot. If you've also watched both (or any!!!!) you should talk to me actually :D

Taiwan, March 8, Peace Park and Ximending

I decided it was time to leave my walkable radius. Took train to Taipei Main, as that seemed quick and promising. Main is rather large and confusing but I eventually made it to the surface. Walking south a bit took me to 228 Peace Park; the '228' refers to something in Taiwanese history that I should look up. Park includes the National Museum, which is said to be really good and is cheap (NT$ 30, basically US$1) but I need to get up earlier for it. Park was nice. Album! Read more... )

Links Extra: More data than you ever wanted.

I was chatting to a couple of friends last week, and realised that I really fancied having one of those "bar chart race" videos for my links, showing what had been the most popular links over the last 21 years that I've been saving links (to Delicious, and then Pinboard).

So I downloaded the JSON blob of my whole link history, used some PowerShell to slice and dice it into a CSV, and uploaded it to a site that converts a bunch of data with dates into a bar chart race. And voila:

Unsurprising to see "Europe" break the top 20 in 2017. Followed a year later by "OhForFucksSake".

Both files available here, for the very curious.

iron chef as experienced by ants

maybe my path in life is to like just become so enamored with ants that i'll have no choice but to make super sexy ocs of them or something

cause there i was, lemon ginger tea freshly steeped, and of course i gotta add a spoon of honey so there i go, with my spoon, opening up the jar

and there

there the little bastards are

in all fairness to the ants, honey IS pretty tasty, so i can't blame them completely... was just... not the best surprise to look down and see them all yelling at me... maybe the feeling was mutual though, maybe to them i interrupted their chopped challenge featuring honey...

i haven't seen chopped in a good minute... i remember liking it—well, sometimes, because it was pretty stressful... that reminds me, the other day when i went to get my car oil changed, there was a show playing called "the repair shop" where this group of restorers would fix/restore old items that had been brought in, and from what i saw a lot of them were items that had a lot of personal history with the owners, which i found really touching :') so i'm definitely interested in looking more into the show when i can :v

anyhow, one of the ants did fall into the honey and i sent him off as gently as i could... and still used the honey because 1) honey is Expensive and 2) i'm not sure why, but i always feel like ants are a lot cleaner? than some other bugs?

like the other day when i was finishing up some homework, i set down my tea for a split second and when i picked it back up, a gnat decided to make its final rest there and i... just could not finish it (thankfully there was like... maybe not even a fourth? of it left?) but sigh

such is life

Took a left, hit a nerve, took a right, hit the curb

For various reasons not limited to the overhead activity of children in the mornings, last night was the first real time all week that I slept and have thus spent most of the day in a vague state of hibernation despite the warmth of the air. There was a mauve overcast around sunset that turned out to belong to a volcanic wall of gold and bougainvillea over an agate-blue cloud-band. Have some mostly musical links.

For the more than twenty years since [personal profile] lesser_celery made me a CD of Peter Gabriel's Melt (1980), I have assumed that the eerily voiced French refrain of "Games Without Frontiers" was either the singer's own falsetto or pitch-shifted vocals. It turns out to be Kate Bush. I would never have identified her on my own, but then I thought about "Army Dreamers" (1980).

I grew up on Arlo Guthrie, but my favorite version of "City of New Orleans" (1971) is almost certainly Steve Goodman himself in 1970, where he reminded me unexpectedly of a Chicago-accented Stan Rogers. It's driving me nuts that I would swear the first person I heard lead "The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over" (1977) was Pete Seeger and I can't figure out where.

WERS has been playing nothing but female artists for International Women's Day, which means everything from Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" (1978), Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine" (1983), and Bikini Kill's "Rebel Girl" (1993) to Tegan and Sara's "I'll Be Back Someday" (2019), Orla Gartland's "Little Chaos" (2024), and Arlo Parks' "2SIDED" (2026). I had a moral obligation to let my father know when Rickie Lee Jones came around.

Video quality regardless, [personal profile] sholio's "Waking Up in Vegas" (The Greatest American Hero) remains one of my all-time favorites of their vids.

Meiko Misbehaving

Meiko VIII
Meiko VIII
My iPhone 13 mini

Meiko, my 4 1/2 year old iPhone 13 mini, is starting to have problems.

I charge my phone at bedside every night, but in the last few months, charging has been unreliable. Initially it seemed like maybe the Lightning connector wasn’t being plugged in all the way. Then I thought that the charging cable was failing, as it had been weakened where the cable bent a little before the Lightning plug. Moving the phone or flexing the cable would either make charging resume – or stop charging without announcement. Pretty irritating.

A few days ago I bought a new AC adapter – which would charge the iPhone faster – and a new Lightning cord. Hopefully, the new setup would fix the intermittent charging issues. It didn’t.

The new Lightning cable is stiffer and sturdier – which is actually a little bit of a problem in the small space where the iPhone gets charged every night. Adjustments were made. But the iPhone still intermittently stopped charging anytime the phone was moved or set down.

The iPhone was in a very, very thin protective case (by Totallee) – and I finally took that case off so that I could get the most sure and secure connection at the Lightning plug. Things are a little better – but still iffy. Right now, I’m just very careful when charging the iPhone. I guess maybe the Lightning port is weakened and wobbly.

My plan had been to replace my iPhone 13 mini with an iPhone 20 Pro when it’s released in Fall 2027. It’s not clear my iPhone will last that long – but I’m still going to try. I’d hate to have to settle for an iPhone 18 Pro – or even an iPhone 17 Pro if things fail soon. I’ve never had an iPhone fail on me prior to replacement. I suppose there’s a first time for everything.

I don’t like wireless charging, but I could resort to that if the Lightning port fails completely. The new AC adapter heats up the phone a lot more – perhaps as much as wireless charging heats up the phone. The battery will degrade faster – but the phone will retire in 18 months (or sooner) anyway, so it probably doesn’t matter.

From now until end-of-life, Meiko will be naked. The Lightning plug is most secure when there’s no case. It’s weird holding an unsheathed iPhone. The smooth phone feels nice and looks clean – but eventually it will get dinged up.

want to vent

a lot of online feminists and “female-centric” westerners often don’t realize why female players keep begging for more male character content. it’s because a lot of otaku media is heavily catered to male demographics, while joseimuke media barely gets anything and often ends up being low-quality.

yes, it can be annoying, but you have to understand that when many gacha games are extremely skewed toward female characters, it’s not because the devs care about women’s representation. it’s because most gacha developers are men, and they prioritize pandering to male players, even when they claim to be “omnipandering.”

and when female players ask for male characters, they want male characters that pander to them: their tastes and their gaze. it’s not because they’re “male-centric.” a lot of women in this world are attracted to men, and no, jessica, cishet men don’t benefit from women thirsting over 2d ikemen boys. that doesn’t make it male-centric.

i can sympathize with this frustration because female otaku and women demographics are often treated like second-class citizens. many developers and companies just give them low-effort cash grabs while the male audience gets higher-quality content.

the moment twitter feminism stops assuming that women liking or preferring male characters means they have internalized misogyny or they're sexist is the moment we can finally have a real discussion about the patriarchal structure of media demographics—how so much media is still systemically catered toward men.

there’s no real “true” omnipandering media, because most of the time it still prioritizes men or treats the male demographic as the default audience first and foremost. not many people seem willing to admit that.

sorry if this sounds too “woke,” but i genuinely think female otaku and women audiences deserve much better than scraps and being treated like second-class citizens. just look at joseimuke media and compare it to many danseimuke titles that receive much bigger budgets and higher-quality production.
